Nimrodel by Canis-Lupess Nimrodel by Canis-Lupess
Another old LOTR piece. This is of Nimrodel who only features in a poem in LOTR. She wasn't around at the time that the LOTR took place...she was long gone, lol. Here, she is meant to be in Lorien where the leaves on the trees go gold in winter rather than falling off.

There was a lot of watercolour pencil in this piece aloing woth the other media I use. People aren't my strength when drawing and painting although I'm sure I'd improve if I did more of them.

This turned up in a search, and I love it. There aren't many pictures of Nimrodel out there, and I imagine that she looked exactly like this. The reflections are beautifully painted.

I always loved the poem of Nimrodel. And this picture is just as wonderful as Tolkien's words.

i really like your Tolkien art, i'm not up to this level yet, sure it didn't help much taking like two years break from it but i've still improved!
lol, people arn't you're strong point you say, well landscapes arn't mine! i can do them just i can't imagine all the detail and all unless i'm doing it from life! i'll probaly get better the more i do but recently i've been thinking that it might be quite fun to team up with a good landscape artist so that together we make one wholy beautiful peice!
i think your people are lovely tho, i like Nimrodel best so far:)!

Thanks for that. If I got more practise at people, I'd most likely improve but I don't generally have my heart in it. Animals are my subject.

I have read LOTR a long time ago, and I can't remember if she was Arwen's relative... was she?
Anyway, is such a beautiful picture!

I can't remember either to be honest. It tells of her in LOTR but not in great detail. You have to read the other books, I think, to get more information on her.

That's an absolutely stunning picture... It's so detailed! All the grass, trees, rocks and leaves. I love the water with the stones, reflections and ripples. (Thanks for the explanation on how you did hose!) The waterbanks are really nice as well, with 'her' waterfall at the far end.

It really looks like how I've always imagined Lorien, like an open forest.

Nimrodel looks quite well, she is not as realistic as it could probably be, but I like it this way, she fits right in. :)

People aren't my strong point. I only did a few in these Tolkien pieces. Not had much practise doing people otherwise.

Thanks.

How on earth did you get it too look so clear and, well, water like? serious question.

Gorgeous painting, green with envy but still a beautiful piece.

Hmm, describing technique is almost impossible. I used a lot of watercolour pencil on the water area. It was a few years ago now. The main secret was the stones on the stream bed and making them look different according to where they were, in a place that was hit by light and had reflections or a place in the shadow of the rocks etc...where they show up more. Remember how you often shield out the light in order to see down into the water because reflections obscure the view. Adding little water lines in a greyish colour around some of the rocks also helps.

I'll try that the next time I'm brave enough to attempt a water scene, got some watercolour pencils with to play with now though

I hadn't done much in the way or water before this one but it turned out ok. It is a case of understanding what is going on with regards to reflections, water ripples etc..and then transferring that onto paper. Really study any water in your ref photos you use and figure out exactly what is going on that makes it look like water and remember these things when you paint/draw. Whilst looking at the photo, try to imagine how you could draw/paint it to get that effect.

I do that all the time, lol. Even when looking at real objects whilst out and about, I'm always imagining how it could be painted to look convincing.:D

Yeah, I hadn't seen her portrayed anywhere else either. I did like to look for those elusive scenes little done. There are plenty more I'd have liked to do too. I just lost the urge.

This picture seems very beautiful to me, and perfectly fit to illustrate the poem (or song) about Nimrodel from the LOTR. Especially because not Nimrodel , nor the landscape are looking too much realistic!
