Artist's Comments

Another one of my Old Tolkien pieces by request. John Howe chose this as the winner of an online tolkien art competition. I was really pleased.

I kept a sort of monochromatic effect with this because you don't really see colour at night because your cones which pick up colour only function correctly in bright light.
I'd maybe add some more slight blue tones to the piece now...who knows.

No, I did not copy any of my images from the films and painted most of these before the films came out.

Of the four, I'd say this is the strongest. Something about it just draws me right into the scene. :)

Thanks.

I used mixed media, a lot of acrylic, some coloured pencil, black ink.

Yeah, this was one of my faves also. I think because the viewpoint is quite low so the nazgul are looming that bit more...as if you're really there watching them come at you. Sometimes, I do these things without really thinking about them.
:icondancingcavy:
I agree. :) It also has really nice atmosphere and, due to it's more monochromatic color scheme, really feels ominous.

One more thing: I think your imagination is great.. I would't be able to imagine something like this without seeing the movie [which is very good in my opinion].

Thanks. I'm glad the painting pulls the viewer in. I must admit, it does it to me too.

I really like this one. It is amazing that you drew this before the movie came out! The scene is pretty much the same...its great! :D
